The problem

What causes dry eye?

Most chronic dry eye is caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) — when the oil-producing glands along your eyelids become blocked with hardened oils. Without that oily layer, tears evaporate too quickly, leaving eyes dry, irritated and uncomfortable.IPL is one of the most effective treatments available for this type of evaporative dry eye.

Is IPL right for you

Ideal candidates for IPL

IPL therapy is especially effective for:
BOOK APPOINTMENT
MGD sufferers: Blocked oil glands causing tears to evaporate too quickly.
Chronic inflammation: Eyelid inflammation or abnormal blood vessels around the eyes.
Ocular rosacea: Skin rosacea that frequently triggers gland dysfunction.
Blepharitis / Demodex: Eyelash mites or bacterial infection along the eyelid margin.
Fair–medium skin tones: IPL is safest and most effective on lighter phototypes.

Who should avoid IPL

Very dark skin tones (device/practitioner dependent)
Active skin infections, tattoos or skin cancer in the treatment area
Pregnant patients, or those on photosensitising medication

How IPL works

IPL uses short bursts of filtered, broad-spectrum light applied to the skin of the lower cheeks and around the eyes, never directly on the eyeball, while you wear protective eye shields.
Reduces inflammation: closes tiny abnormal blood vessels on the eyelids that carry inflammatory cells.
Melts blocked oils: gentle heat softens hardened oils trapped inside the meibomian glands.
Clears bacteria: helps kill bacteria and microscopic eyelid mites (Demodex) that cause irritation.

FAQ

Answers to your IPL  questions.

Is IPL treatment painful?

No. The light is applied to the skin of the lower cheeks and around the eyes, never directly on the eyeball, and you wear protective eye shields throughout. Most patients describe it as a warm sensation rather than pain.

How soon will I notice results?

Many patients notice an improvement after just a few sessions, though the full course of 3–4 treatments is recommended for the best results.

How long does relief typically last?

Relief typically lasts 6 to 12 months, after which an occasional maintenance treatment may be needed.

Do I need the assessment before booking treatment?

Yes. The initial dry eye assessment (tear analysis and skin patch test) is required for everyone before starting IPL treatment.
