Our Eye Examination Services

Optomap – Ultra-Widefield Retinal Image

When it comes to our eye examinations, one of the most valuable specialist tools that we have is the Optomap. The Optopmap is a non-invasive procedure that plays a crucial role in early detection and, unlike traditional methods that typically reveal only 10-15% of your retina at one time, the Optomap captures more than 80% of your retina in one image. These Ultra-Widefield retinal images allow us to examine a larger portion of your retina, meaning that we can identify potential issues that may otherwise go undetected, and gives our opticians a clearer understanding of your overall eye health.

This early detection allows us to provide prompt treatment and prevent further complications, and also gives you a clearer understanding of your own eye health and the importance of regular eye examinations, as it allows you to see your own retinal image in a unique 3D wrap sequence.

Optical Coherence Tomography (O.C.T.)

Another innovative imaging test we offer is Optical Coherence Tomography, also known as OCT. This non-invasive procedure allows our optometrists to look at cross-sectional layers of the retina and other eye structures, and by analysing and measuring each of these ten layers, we can identify the early stages of retinal diseases and eye conditions.

OCT is particularly useful in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and other diseases, and with this advanced technology, we can track changes in your eye health over time and develop personalised treatment plans to preserve your vision.

Digital Retinal Photography

To complement our comprehensive eye examination services, we also offer digital retinal photography to detect, diagnose, and monitor early signs of eye conditions, including macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachments, and diabetic retinopathy. These conditions affect hundreds of thousands of people in the UK, and early detection is key to providing timely interventions and preserving your eye health.

The digital images of your retina captured during your eye test can be, if necessary, emailed to a doctor for further evaluation, and this proactive approach allows us to offer tailored solutions to address any concerns and maintain optimal vision.

Field Screening

Visual field tests are an essential component of a comprehensive eye examination. These tests assess the potential presence of blind spots or abnormalities that may indicate the presence of glaucoma or other eye conditions.

Whether you have a family history of glaucoma or are simply concerned about your eye health, our team will ensure that your eyes are thoroughly screened for any signs of this potentially sight-threatening condition and provide you with the necessary guidance and support to maintain clear vision.

Glaucoma Screening

Glaucoma is a condition that affects the optic nerve, causing gradual vision loss, and often develops without noticeable symptoms until significant damage has already occurred, so early detection is crucial for preserving your vision.

At Dominic Tunnell Opticians, we use various methods to screen for glaucoma. Our most used method involves directing a tiny pulse of air onto the front of the eye to measure the pressure inside the eye and assess your risk of developing the condition. If this method is not suitable for any reason, we have two alternative methods available, including the use of a ‘rebound’ device that measures intraocular pressure without the need for an air puff, or the Goldmann device. This medical tool, favoured by eye specialists, is used after applying an anaesthetic drop to ensure your comfort throughout the examination.

By offering multiple screening methods, we can tailor our approach to suit your specific needs and ensure accurate results. Regular glaucoma screenings are essential, particularly if you have a family history of the disease or are over the age of 40, and taking proactive measures to detect and manage glaucoma can help preserve your vision and overall eye health.

Our Eye Examinations

At Dominic Tunnell Opticians, we offer different levels of eye examinations to cater to your individual needs and provide ongoing support for your eye health, so whether you are looking for a standard eye exam or a more comprehensive assessment, our optometrists are here to provide the highest standard of care.

Standard Eye Exam

Our standard eye examination includes a thorough assessment of your vision, along with glaucoma screening, to evaluate your visual ability and check the health of your eyes.

If you meet the criteria, we also offer NHS sight tests, including those for diabetics, individuals with a family history of glaucoma, and those receiving Income Support and Pension Credit Guarantee Credit.

Extended Eye Exam

For a more comprehensive evaluation, we offer an extended eye examination that includes glaucoma screening, as well as the OCT retinal scan, aiding in the early detection and diagnosis of various eye conditions. As with our standard eye exam, we also provide NHS sight tests for eligible individuals.
