At Dominic Tunnell Opticians, we regularly get asked how to put contact lenses in and how to take them out properly. That’s why we wanted to give you a helping hand by writing a simple guide on how to do it. If you want to be in the know, read on.

1. How to put contact lenses in:

Wash your hands with soap and water, rinse and dry your hands with a lint free towel

Check that the lens is not the wrong way round. To work out which way round it is, pop the lens onto the tip of your finger and hold it up to a light source. If the edges of the lens flare out, it’s inside out

Using your other hand, lift up your top eyelid to avoid blinking

Pull down the lower lid with your fingers on the hand that you’re applying the lenses with

Move the contact lens towards your eye and pop it in, slowly releasing your eyelid

Close your eye for a couple of seconds to let the lens settle

Follow the same steps for your other eye

2. How to take contact lenses out:

As recommended when putting your lenses in, always make sure that you wash your hands before taking your lenses out too

Starting with your right eye will allow you to avoid mixing up your lenses

Look at the ceiling and pull down your lower eyelid with your middle finger

Bring your index finger towards your eye and touch the lower edge of the lens

Slide it down to the white part of your eye and squeeze the lens between the thumb and index finger to take it out

Remove the left lens in the same way

If your lenses are reusable then make sure you clean and disinfect them

For daily disposable lenses, you can throw them away
